Workshop: Color for Crocheters

This workshop is scheduled for May 24, 2003, from 10am to 5pm (with a lunch break) on East 23rd Street in midtown. This six-hour workshop is a concise lecture on Color Theory and a hands-on experience utilizing the theory. How to put colors together and why they work harmoniously are demonstrated using the yarns you bring to class. A written handout of the theory and exercises to practice are provided. This workshop is suitable for crocheters of all levels.

The instructor, Barbara Kerr, is a passionate knitter and crocheter who has been knitting every day since she was 17 years old. She has studied with many experts in the field including, Kaffe Fasset, Alice Starmore, Sally Melville, Horst Schulz, and June Hiatt, and has traveled to England, Ireland, Scotland, and California in search of knitting knowledge. For the past 3 years Barbara has been teaching weekly. Since April of 2000, she has taught 60 workshops and is still going strong! She specializes in Patchwork Knitting but her expertise runs from simple projects to filet crochet to complex garment designs involving unique textiles with varying textures, colors and shapes (suitable for the most advanced knitter looking for inspiration). Her website is at www.barbarakerrknits.com.

She has provided us with the following description for the class:

Color is everywhere. How we perceive it depends on many things. Are we outdoors on a gray day, or in a candlelit dining room?

Lighting is everything. The time of the day, the season, our feelings, how far away the color is, are some of the variables.

Color is ever changing and dynamic, the color that it’s next to and the proportion of one color to another influences our perception.

Color theory is intuitive in some, yet even the greatest artists knew and used color theory.

Best of all color theory is learnable and we are biologically designed to see color. Understanding the relationship between color, light, value and contrast enhances creative freedom.

This workshop will focus on a step-by-step approach to understanding basic color theory. You will have a handout to take home so you can put into practice some of the theory.

We will spend the day practicing and playing with colorful yarn.
