Willena's Corner

I had a wonderful time at the Barbie Doll Convention in Florida. Each year a different club hosts the event. The day I enjoy the most is the fashion show. I can show off my talent by recreating one of Barbie’s outfits. This year I was Mbili Barbie. (See http://www.barbiecollectibles.com/showcase/product.asp?type=&subtype=&product_id=1001807 --it’s one of the 2002 dolls). I crocheted the outfit, which included a white beaded top with blue sleeves, a multicolor skirt and blue boots. I love it when I get an opportunity to show crocheting in a fun and exciting way. For all my hard work, I won one of the five gift certificates being offered to the outfits that received the loudest audience applause.

The outfit was mostly made from Lamb’s Pride cotton yarn, various size 10 threads, and cotton baby yarn. I love adding the size 10 thread because it prevents the cotton yarn from stretching.

In addition, I won third prize for my bride doll in the crochet competition category. I used polar fleece with various cotton yarns.

Entering the fashion show and doll competition allows me to promote crocheting in a non-fiber setting and also allows me to experiment with various yarns and designs
