Stitches That Heal - Exhibit by Akiko Kotani

The exhibit was WELL worth seeing. Akiko told me that it took her three years to finish (not to hang but including all the preparation as there were so many submissions). She also said that she learned so much about doilies. She thought they were only crocheted. There were knitted ones sent to her and one was made using handkerchiefs. Another was made using shiny paper in the center and then adding an edging to give it a doily effect. There were also other non-traditional doilies submitted and hung. I took pictures and I hope they will come out so we can see them closer.

Akiko told me to see her tapestry art at Rodef Shalom. It took some time to get in but we persevered and got into the synagogue. When I asked about the tapestry, the gentleman there said it hadn't been hung yet and that it would be hung on Tuesday. He said that he would be able to get it from the vault and show us. What a magnificent piece! I have a postcard of it. It is called Joseph, 1994. It is a beautiful piece which is stitched wool on handwoven canvas 60" x 40".

Akiko will be in NY and is inviting the guild to her artist’s reception on December 9th at the A. Jain Marunouchi Gallery, 24 W. 57th Street from 5:30 pm - 7:30 pm. The whole exhibit will be from Dec. 8, 2003 - Jan. 3, 2004
