Yafemi Adenire is well-known among Harlem’s aficionados of African beadwork. Although she has been crocheting since childhood and has sold several pieces, she is less well known though not less accomplished in that craft. Yafemi’s educational background had its foundation in the broad exposure to the arts provided by her mother: museum and theatre as well as visits and training in music, theatre arts and dance since the age of 5. She attended the High School of Music and Art and the prestigious Cooper Union School of Fine Art and Architecture. She is currently concentrating on the art of embroidered tapestry but has agreed to share her crochet skills with us.

Most of Yafemi’s art is characterized by the use of vivid color and the interplay of patterns. Students will be shown how to increase and decrease the number of stitches within patterns while working in the round in designs from their own imaginations. The class will be geared toward students with basic knowledge of single and double crochet stitches.

Rhythm of Life 4U features ongoing series designed to introduce textile crafts to the community. The first response most people have when they hear crocheting is “Oh my grandmother used to crochet” or knit or quilt. But did you know that crocheting, along with other forms of crafts, helps to reduce stress? Adults who were introduced to crafts considered themselves to be more energetic, relaxed and accomplished more. Studies showed that children ages 8 to 12 who were introduced to crocheting and sewing showed an increase in creativity. Working with the factors of color, fabric options, design and proportion helps to stimulate and focus creative energy, which builds self-esteem. Looking forward to seeing you!
