Crocheting for Hurricane Katrina Victims

As New Yorkers we understand the impact a catastrophic event has on the lives and minds of our citizens. Although it is quite warm in the areas affected by Katrina, many have been relocated to cooler areas of the country and the clean up may well last into the winter. Many have lost all their possessions and items such as hats and blankets would be most welcome.

There are any number of organizations that have been set up to donate crocheted and knitted items to help those in need. A few have been mentioned on the Yahoo Group mail:

-The Harlem Knitting Circle has an ongoing project to knit and crochet children’s blankets at The George Bruce Library-518 West 125th St. (between Amsterdam Avenue & Broadway) on Saturdays between 11am and 2pm.

Materials: Bring your own hooks, needles and yarn!

Note #1-yarn must be acrylic or cotton acrylic mix. NO WOOL!

Note #2-These blankets will be distributed to families with infants, toddlers, and children of elementary school age (3-11)

Note #3-blanket size and style is "open". Do what you feel you can, (it's coming from your heart!)

Note #4-Blankets can also be done at home and brought in. Please pin your name and phone number on blankets with safety pin)

Note: HKC IS IN NEED OF YARN DONATIONS as well.

-Melanie Mays, our member who has relocated to Florida is collecting blankets for a number of local organizations. She can be contacted via the guild email; she is also organizing local crocheters and knitters to go into the shelters to teach classes to help the evacuees pass the time.

-Claudia K. of Countrywool (who graciously allowed In the Loop to print her article on KoolAid Dyeing) is collecting warm clothing and blankets for evacuees who are being housed in upstate NY and Massachusetts. http://www.countrywool.com

-The Lion Brand website has an extensive list of charitable organizations that need donations for people, as well as, animals affected by Katrina.  http://www.lionbrand.com/reliefCharities.html
