NYC Crochet Guild Month

From the Office of the Mayor City of New York

PROCLAMATION

Whereas: The month of March with its blustery days and still-chilly nights is the perfect time to celebrate the fifth anniversary of the NYC Crochet Guild. This thriving organization boasts approximately 150 active members whose products are beautiful and very often warm.

Whereas: The New York City Crochet Guild is the largest such organization in the country. Its membership includes three international fiber artists, a number of professionals who earn their living through crochet and other fiber arts, teachers and others who are simply skilled practitioners of the craft. These dedicated craftspeople have crocheted blankets for Project Linus, participated in free teaching workshops at the Museum of Art and Design, and presented countless demonstrations.

Whereas: NYC is proclaimed as the world’s cultural capital because it embraces all forms of art. For five years the NYCCG has been an unfailing champion of an art form that appeals to our senses of touch and sight. On behalf of our city, may your needles continue to fly with great speed and wondrous precision.

Now, therefore, I, Michael R. Bloomberg, Mayor of the City of New York, in recognition of this important event, do hereby proclaim March 2006 in the city of New York New York City Crochet Guild Month.

Mayor Bloomberg was presented with a beautiful crocheted red tie of alpaca and silk made by Mary DuBois. Our thanks to Barbara Williams who came up with the sensational idea, drafted the accompanying letter and generally shepherded this project from beginning to end, and to Maria Deliz and of course Mary DuBois for their help.
