Pattern Stitches

Shell (2 dc, ch 1, 2 dc) in ch sp.

Shell A: (2 dc, ch 2, 2 dc) in ch sp.

Shell B: (3 dc, ch 2, 3dc) in ch sp.

Shell C: (4 dc, ch 2, 4dc) in ch sp.

Popcorn (pc): Place 5 dc in same st, drop loop from hook and insert hook in first dc made, pick up dropped loop, sl st.

Instructions

Crown

Ch 4, join with sl st. to form ring.

Rnd 1: Ch 2, counts as first hdc, make 9 more hdc in ring. Place a marker. (10 hdc) Work in continuous rounds. The marker is beg of new round. Do not join round unless stated.

Rnd 2: 2 dc in top of ch 2, 2 dc in each hdc around to marker. (20 dc)

Rnd 3: *2 dc in next dc, dc in next dc*. Rep from * to * around. (30 dc)

Rnd 4: Ch 2, *Dc in next dc, 2 dc in next, dc in next dc, ch 2*. Rep from * to * around. (40 dc & 10 ch 2 sp)

Rnd 5: Sk ch 2, *sk dc, dc in next dc, 2 dc in next dc, dc in next dc, ch 1, 2 dc in ch 2 sp, ch 1*. Rep from * to * around. Ch 1. 60 dc

Rnd 6: *Sk 2 dc, 2dc in next dc, sk 1 dc, ch 1, 2dc in next ch 1 sp*. Rep from * to * around. Ch 1.

Rnd 7: Shell in next ch 1 sp, sk 2dc, dc in next ch 1 sp, *sk 2 dc, shell in next ch 1 sp, sk 2 dc, dc in next ch 1sp* Rep from * to * around. (15 shells, 15 dc)

You should have a flat circle. Increases will be made by using more dc chain stitches in shell st (note changes in shell st). This will keep the circle flat.

Rnd 8: *Shell A in next ch sp, fpdc in next dc* Rep from * to * around.

Rnd 9: *Shell B in next ch 2 sp, fpdc in next fpdc.* Rep from * to * around.

Rnd 10: *Ch 1, shell B in next ch 2 sp, fpdc in next fpdc*. Rep from * to * around.

Rnds 11-12: *Ch 2, Shell B in next ch 2 sp of shell B, fpdc in next fpdc*. Rep from * to * around.

Rnds 13 -14: *Ch 2, Shell C in next ch 2 sp of Shell B, ch 2, fpdc in next fpdc*. Rep from * to * around.

Rnd 15: Ch 2, *2 dc in ch 2 sp, ch 2, sc in ch 2 of shell, ch 2, 2 dc in ch space, dc in fpdc.* Rep. from * to * around. Join with sl st in top of ch 2 sp.

Note: Crown will begin to curl as you begin working sides of crown. The following rnds will be joined.

Rnd 16: Ch 1 and turn. Sc in next 3 dc, 2 sc in next ch sp, sc in next sc, 2 sc in next ch sp, *sc in next 5 dc, 2 sc in next ch sp, sc in next sc, 2 sc in next ch sp*. Rep from * to * until last 2 dc. Sc in each of the last 2 dc. Join with sl st. (150 sc)

Rnds 17- 18: Ch 3, skip 1st sc, dc in each sc around. Join with sl st in top of ch-3. (150)

Rnd 19: Ch 3, skip 1st dc, dc in next 7 dc, dc next 2 dc tog, dc in next 4 dc, popcorn (pc) in next dc, dc in next 3, dc next 2 dc tog, *dc in next 8 dc, dc next 2 dc tog, dc in next 8 dc, dc next 2 dc tog. dc in next 4 dc, pc in next dc, dc in next 3 dc, dc next 2 dc tog*. Repeat from * to * to the last 10 dc. Dc in last 8 dc, dc next 2 dc tog. Join with sl st in top of ch-3. (135 dc)

Rnd 20: Ch 3, dc in each dc and pc stitch around. Join with sl st in top of ch-3.

Rnd 21: Ch 3, sk 1st dc, dc in next 10 dc, pc in next dc, dc in next dc, pc in next dc, dc in next dc, pc in next dc, *dc in next 22 st, pc in next dc, dc in next dc, pc in next dc, dc in next dc, pc in next dc, * Rep from * to * until last 11 dc. Dc in next 11 dc. Join with sl st in top of ch-3.

Rnd 22: Rep Rnd 20.

Rnd 23: Ch 3, dc in next 12 dc, pc in next dc, *dc in next 26 dc, pc in next dc*. Rep from * to * until last 13 dc. Dc in last 13 dc. Join with sl st in top of ch-3.

Rnds 24-25: Rep Rnd 20.

Rnd 26: Ch 1, turn, sc in each dc around. Join with sl st in ch 1 space

Rnd 27: Ch 1, turn, sc in each sc. Join with sl st in ch 1 space.

Rnd 28: Ch 1, rsc in each sc around. Fasten off. Weave in loose ends.

Finishing: Beads and Tassels are optional. The beads are stitched on between the pc sts and are sewn in the same format as the pc st. Add tassel to top of hat.
